If you have a particular skill then there may be franchises that suit you, and some franchises can give you support and ensure that your business can survive.
The thing to remember though is that normally the franchisor will not find clients or customers for you. Even after you have paid the upfront fees and the regular monthly franchise fee, that you will have to get out there and find your customers.
Think realistically about where those customers will come from and how long it may take to find them so that you have some cash flow being generated.
Avoid Buying Premises
The first thing to avoid is too much overhead. So do not even think about buying premises.
Start your business working from home.
Sometimes a low-cost way to get started on retail outlets is to have a pop-up store, which you can place in a suitable location, either in the marketplace or in the Shopping Mall, for which you will have to pay a pitch fee.
Avoid Leasehold Commitments
If you absolutely must have a shop premises then rent space from an existing store at low cost and for a limited period, such as weekly. You should avoid lease commitments for years and years, where irrespective of whether you are making money or not, you are committed to paying the lease.
Avoid Hire Purchase Or Leasing Of Vehicles
Until you have cash flow coming in regularly and you are sure that you can meet such rental or lease payments, then avoid renting or leasing vehicles. It is better to use your old vehicle even though it might not be entirely suitable until you get your business off the ground. Borrow a vehicle if you have to, or use public transport, but avoid having large fixed payments monthly, which if you do not meet them means that your vehicle will be repossessed, and your credit rating will suffer.
Decide What Service You Can Offer to People
What are you good at?
Answer this question honestly and see if you think there will be people who will pay for such services. Maybe you already know your future clients and customers and they recognise your skills, which they will be prepared to pay you when you become Self Employed.
If you have carried out some training and have some skills, then probably these will be the sort of services which you can offer and which people will be prepared to pay you for, at the market rate.
Let people know that you are available to do such work, all your friends and acquaintances, and publish your services on Social Media regularly. It is surprising how people have needs or problems which they must solve quickly and all of a sudden you will find yourself in demand.
Here are some suggestions for services which you could offer, depending on your skillset, but with little experience:
- Doing Odd Jobs For People – Older people especially often need small jobs around the house done, for which they are prepared to pay someone.
- Babysitting -There is always a demand for babysitters, so you just need to make sure you get paid a good rate for your time.
- House-sitting – People sometimes want their house occupied while they go away on holiday or business and you can offer such a service.
- Labouring – If you have no other skills, but are fit and active, then you may be able to find work labouring on construction sites. This can be pretty hard though.
- House clearing and Disposal of Rubbish – Carrying waste and unwanted items to tip for recycling is a real need and you can offer such a service if you have a suitable vehicle. Beware that as a business you must pay for disposal fees which you will have to pass on to your client or customer.
- Assisting with small businesses, either as a sales assistant or offering more specialised services such as book-keeping if you have such skills. Sometimes you can support more than one business and have part time jobs in more than one shop.

- Painting and Decorating – you need to know your limitations.

- Catering – do you have culinary skills and training?
